The family home before the campaign
Coen grew up in Laslea with Pieter, Esme, Yanna, Mirto, and Lunka. As the eldest child, he worked beside Pieter in the silver mines, helped care for his siblings, learned basic swordsmanship, and secretly studied Latin.
The village’s isolation did not protect it from the Black Plague. Loss and Esme’s worsening health placed the family under pressure even before Brencis’ rise captured them inside a much larger conflict.
Knowledge kept in a small village
Anca gathers plants, prepares remedies, and taught Coen to read beyond the literal meaning of words. Zdislav records warnings about the monsters that haunt the woods, swamps, mines, and mountains.
Laslea therefore connects ordinary survival knowledge—herbs, mining, family labor, and local stories—to the supernatural systems Coen encounters across Vale Sangora.
Why the village anchors Coen’s choices
The rescue window is personal because it grows from specific relationships, not a generic world-ending timer. Coen’s values were formed by work, responsibility, and the people of Laslea before vampire power made those duties impossible to keep separate.
A later route can change who survives and how Coen is remembered, but Laslea remains the reference point for what he was trying to protect.
