Short answer
Choose your ally and preserve a manual save before the finale. Ending totals differ because guides group assault variations, early exits, and the expired family deadline differently. The routes below explain what each choice actually changes.
Key facts
- Story spoilers below: read the save plan first if you want to avoid outcomes.
- A finale save only preserves routes you have already unlocked.
- The family deadline and the castle approach are separate decisions.
- An ending trophy is not a guarantee of the same difficulty trophy.
Before reading the ending routes
Keep a named manual save outside the final commitment, then use a different slot for the route you are trying. Write down your current day, available allies, and unfinished personal quests. A save made after a branch closes cannot restore the earlier choice.
For a first playthrough, decide what matters most to you: rescuing the family, supporting a particular ally, or seeing an unusual exit. Use that goal to choose the next section. You do not need to spoil every epilogue variation to make a deliberate final decision.
Ending routes at a glance
Spoilers: these names describe the broad outcome. The corresponding quest can have several approaches.
| Route | What you commit to | Preparation |
|---|---|---|
| The Folk Hero | Defeat Brencis without Lacra or Crake | Keep a save before the solo confrontation |
| The Patricide | Stand with Lacra against Brencis | Finish her route to Midnight Reckoning |
| The Knyazmaker | Support Crake and the Manumits | Reach Rise at Dawn / Fall Before Dusk |
| The Turncoat | Trade an ally for the family through Brencis | Preserve a save before accepting the bargain |
| A Hero They Deserve | Leave the valley | Night route west of Coward’s Path |
| Together Forever | Remain in the Home Sweet Home dream | Silts Tower; keep an earlier save |
| Time Runs Out | The rescue deadline expires | Continue exploring, but the family is lost |
| Brencis prologue shortcut | Win both Brencis battles during the prologue | Keep a separate prologue save; skips the normal campaign |
Can you beat Brencis in the prologue?
Yes. Defeat Brencis in the Laslea prologue encounter, then defeat his final form, Brencis, Grotesque Ascendent. Winning only the first fight is not enough: the second battle is still required to reach this early ending.
Method calls this route Beginner’s Luck. It bypasses the normal campaign and leads to a shortened epilogue resembling the solo ending. Keep a separate prologue save if you want to attempt it without replacing your regular playthrough.
Secret exits and the deadline
For the valley exit, reach the broken bridge west of Coward’s Path at night and use vampire traversal to reach the gate. For the dream route, enter the upper door in Silts Tower to begin Home Sweet Home. These are different decisions from choosing an ally for the castle.
Running out of the rescue period does not lock the application or erase the world. Play can continue after the family dies. If rescuing them is your goal, return to a save with enough time remaining instead of treating continued free exploration as a successful rescue.
Why do guides give different ending counts?
PowerPyx groups seven outcomes, including the missed deadline. PC Gamer counts eight routes and distinguishes more castle and early-ending variations. Neither supports adding “seven main endings” to “two secret endings” as a universal total.
Use the route name and its requirement when comparing walkthroughs. For your own save checklist, keep three separate columns: which approach you used, whether the family survived, and what happened to your allies. That record is more useful than treating every different epilogue detail as another complete ending.
Which ending should you aim for?
There is no single objective “best” outcome for every player. If your priority is a particular companion, read their route before you begin the assault. If you care about achievements, check the exact achievement description rather than relying on whether a walkthrough calls an ending good or bad.
Our suggested approach is to finish the personal stories you care about, keep the shared save untouched, and then explore alternate finales in separate slots. Take a screenshot of your journal alongside the save. It gives you a quick reminder of what that branch can still reach when you return several days later.
Common questions
Can one final save unlock every route?
Only routes whose prerequisites remain available can be replayed from that save. Keep earlier checkpoints for personal quests and secret exits.
Does the timer ending stop exploration?
No. The family deadline can fail while the world remains playable. Continued exploration does not undo that loss.
Can you end the game by beating Brencis in the prologue?
Yes, but you must win both the initial encounter and the final-form battle that follows. This bypasses the normal campaign and gives a shortened epilogue.
