Short answer

Better Story Timer is a PC mod that changes the story-time budget. It is separate from the original game’s action-based clock. Choose one timer variant, preserve your saves and configuration, and follow the author’s current installation instructions for your game version.

Key facts

  • Exploration is not a real-time race against the story clock.
  • Mod options and compatibility can change between releases.
  • An author’s achievement claim is not a test performed by this wiki.
  • Keep an untouched save from before mod installation.

What the original time limit means

The original rescue window is driven by time-advancing actions, rather than minutes spent reading this page or walking around. Before changing the game, identify which activities are consuming your budget. Use the time-cost guide and record the values the game actually displays.

If your main concern is getting lost, the map and planner may be enough. Reserve time for the quests you care about, then explore around those destinations. If your preference is a much larger story budget, the mod offers a different experience, with additional configuration to maintain.

Better Story Timer options

Caites lists version 1.6.1, updated September 13, as ready for game version 1.0.5. The variants include 90 days, 32 segments, or 90 days with 16 segments, plus an optional removal of skill time costs. The author recommends the 90-day option with the skill-cost option, and removing the timer mod for the epilogue.

The author says achievements continue to work and that non-Steam installations are supported with different paths. Those statements describe the author’s reported compatibility, not a guarantee for every platform build or combination of mods.

The September 10 author page also offers a configurable experimental version that requires UE4SS. Its files belong in the UE4SS Mods directory, unlike the Game.ini presets. Choose the instructions for your downloaded package; do not treat the experimental archive as another interchangeable Game.ini preset.

Installation and a recovery plan

The timer uses Game.ini in %LOCALAPPDATA%\Dawnwalker\Saved\Config\Windows. Select one timer variant. The optional skill files go in Dawnwalker\Content\Paks\~mods. Follow the author’s read-only instructions for Game.ini. Timer mods and trait-editing mods can conflict.

Before changing anything, close the game and copy your existing configuration and saves into a dated backup folder outside the working game folders. Make a note of the mod archive version and every file you add. If a destination file already exists, preserve it before replacement.

Test on a separate manual save. Check the displayed calendar and the cost of a familiar activity, then reload that test save to confirm that the state behaves as expected. Do not make your only long-running character the experiment. A cloud sync is useful, but an independent copy gives you a checkpoint that is not automatically replaced.

  1. 1

Read the current author page and choose the matching variant.

  2. 2

Back up existing configuration and saves before installing.

  3. 3

Add only the files for the selected timer and optional skill component.

  4. 4

Test a familiar time-advancing action on a separate save.

  5. 5

Keep a record of the files to remove or restore when returning to the original configuration.

If the timer behaves unexpectedly

Stop making progress on the test branch. Compare your installed files with the archive and check whether another mod edits the same settings. Avoid changing several unrelated values at once: a small, recorded change is easier to diagnose and reverse.

To return to your previous setup, restore your saved configuration and remove only the files you added for this mod. Do not delete an entire shared mods folder. Load the untouched pre-mod save if you need the earlier story state; restoring configuration alone cannot be assumed to undo events already saved.

For a first playthrough, choose based on the experience you want. Keep the original budget if making tradeoffs is part of the appeal. If you prefer more room for personal quests, read the current mod discussion and use a backup before experimenting. Neither choice needs to be treated as a test of how correctly someone plays.

For the experimental package, the author identifies BetterStoryTimerConfigurable inside UE4SS/Mods as the folder to remove. Leave other UE4SS mods intact and keep your pre-mod save.

Common questions

Does Better Story Timer disable achievements?

The author says it does not. This wiki has not run an in-game achievement test, so keep that claim tied to the mod version and source.

Does this guide install the mod for me?

No. It explains the options and links to the author’s page. Download the current package there and use its instructions.

Can I use this installation on PS5 or Xbox?

These are PC file-installation instructions, not a console installation method.
